Plumber vs. Handyman: What’s the difference?

Broken toilet? Blocked drain? Dripping tap that just won’t quit? When unmentionables are coming up when they should be going down, it can be a daunting task finding the right person to get things flowing as they should be. Quite often people look for the cheapest price when things pop up out of the blue – let’s be real - No one has an emergency plumber fund set up for when the toilet backs up. These types of emergency jobs may seem like a quick fix by your local handyman but you may actually need a licensed plumber instead.

To help you work out the right option for you, we’ve put together this cheat sheet to break down the differences between using a handyman vs. a plumber and when you’re better off investing in a quality job by a licensed plumber (which could potentially save you $$ in the long run).

Qualification:

There are many reasons why your pipes are in more qualified hands with a licensed plumber like our tradespeople here at Al’s plumbing and Gas. We don’t deny there are some highly skilled handymen out there, but licensed plumbers go through years of on the job training through an apprenticeship and continually have to update their knowledge as new upgrades enter the industry. These qualifications are mandated by the QLD government for all plumbers meaning you can rest assured, hiring a plumber means you’re getting a reliable result.

Cost:

We don’t deny hiring a handyman is the cheaper option for what may seem to be general plumbing issues. But while some jobs may seem simple, there may be an underlying problem that requires a professional plumber. When you hire a plumber, you’re paying for their experience, expertise, license, and qualification. What you can be assured of when you hire a plumber, is that you’re getting someone who is highly skilled in plumbing specific tasks who has most likely seen and fixed it all.

Access to quality equipment and parts:

Here at Al’s Plumbing and Gas, we’ve built relationships with our plumbing suppliers to provide only the best quality parts to our customers. This includes using parts with a 12-month manufacturer’s warranty to give you peace of mind that the work being done is going to last.

We’d recommend a qualified plumber for your bigger issues ranging from installing a sink, to diagnosing leaks to repairing a hot water system - All of which Al’s Plumbing and Gas can help you out with. Smaller jobs like unclogging drains or replacing a washer on a leaky tap, you local handyman should be able to help you out - or you may even be able to get the job yourself with the help of our blog post on DIY plumbing you can read here!

Still not sure who’s best for the job? Give Al’s Plumbing and Gas a call on 0420 923 660 to get talking to a friendly, fully licensed plumber today and we’ll happily help you out with a diagnostic phone call.
